Government, industry, and academia all brought together at IEEE GCIoT Dubai 2019.

IEEE GCIoT is a Global Conference on Internet of things focusing on Closing the Gap between Research and Implementation.

On December 4, 2019, at Jumeirah Emirates Towers, Dr. Eesa bastaki the conference chair, officially opening the conference in the presence of H.E. Dr. Ahmed Belhoul Al – Falasi the Minister of State for Higher Education and advanced skills - UAE, Dr.Andy Chen the President 2020-2021, IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society (TEMS), In Addition to Keynote speakers, professors and attendees from over 25 countries.

The opening speech started by Dr. Ingrid Mulder that talks about open data x design as a catalyst for smart sustainable cities. Then Dr. Toufi Saliba's speech with an interesting topic TODA / IP fully decentralized P2P internet protocol.

The opening of the Triple Helix Exhibition

The triple helix model of innovation refers to a set of interactions between academia, industry, and governments. In presence of university of Dubai, Zayed University, PTC Company, National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) and HERE Technologies.

By gathering all those exhibitors in one place the triple helix exhibition achieved the main aim, they had access to MENA Market, government regulatory and telecom authority, And met different participants, speakers, VIP's and professors from over 25 countries.

Technical Track

Paper submission is a critical part of the IEEE GCIoT Dubai 2019, it completes the main goal of the conference by closing the gap between Research and Implementation. The technical sessions and papers were aggregate many scientific topics, such as Networking for IoT, smart cities IoT applications and optimizing resources for IoT. every paper was interesting from different backgrounds and perspectives which makes the technical sessions very beneficial and interesting.

Panel Discussion

One of the key parts of the IEEE Global Conference on IoT Dubai 2019 is the panel discussion. The panel discussion was focused on very critical topics talking about the future of IoT in the MENA Region and the problems that faced the Arab Countries toward the IoT Applications.

Those are the main important topics that have been discussed throughout the 3 days:

  • IoT Landscape in MENA Region – Policy prospective. With Dr. Fadel Daigham.
  • Smart Sustainable Cities – Opportunities and Challenges. with Dr. Eddie Custovic.
  • IoT Landscape in MENA Region – Technology Prospective. with Mohamed AbdelJalil.
  • Academia and Universities’ Role in Developing the IoT Industry in the MENA Region with. Dr. Eesa bastaki.
  • IoT and AI applications in cyber security with Dr. Robert bierwolf.
  • Incubators and accelerators Role in developing IoT industry in the MENA region with Khaled Mokhtar.

Industry Summit and Business networking forum

The GCIoT 2019 is expanded this year to include a focused one-day Industry Summit as part of its industry track to address the needs of practitioners in the industry and promote cross-fertilization as an emphasis between private, public and academics to accelerate adoption and implementation.

The Summit aims to bring together companies, senior industry leaders and experts to discuss the challenges in adopting and implementing IoT technologies.

At the beginning of Day 2, Sohaib sheikh opening the industry summit day with keynote speaker Dr. Tarek Khalil - toward a digital world, then Dr. Latif Ladid talked about IPV6 based new internet empowering super IoT, 5G, and blockchain while cyber security is looming.

Then Luca Atti - Head of Gtech Professional services Advertising Platforms Team for MENA and Turkey, invited talk from google.

In the middle of the day the panel discussion started, it was very beneficial it go through critical topics such as Academia and universities' role in developing IoT industry in the MENA region with Dr. Eesa Bastaki, IoT and AI applications in Cyber Security with Dr.Robert Bierwolf.

At the end of the day, the business networking forum was significant networking it aggregates speakers, sponsors, professors, and visitors from different backgrounds and from over 25 countries.

LoraWan workshop

On December 5, 2019, Let’s Move to the invited speech with Laurens slats and the journey of the things Network to fulfill the promise of LoraWAN, he is giving the attendees an overview about LoraWAN and the world’s future to overcome many crises and disasters, by using LoRa Technology and the open LoRaWAN® protocol it enables smart IoT applications that solve some of the biggest challenges facing our planet: energy management, natural resource reduction, pollution control, infrastructure efficiency, disaster prevention, and more

On December 6, 2019, Laurens starting the workshop that talking about how to build your LoraWAN end-to-end use case. During this hands-on workshop, attendees learned how to harvest sensor data, how to communicate wirelessly using The Things Network and how to connect to a 3rd party cloud dashboards to act on the sensor data.

Arab IoT and AI Challenge Finals

Arab IoT & AI Challenge is a regional capacity-building and pre-incubation program for high school students, senior university students, and startups that have innovative ideas in the areas of the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and related fields

On December 4, 2019, the Arab IoT & AI Challenge finals started. The judging process continued over the 3 days of the conference. There were eight teams from different Arab countries and the competition was very intense and inspiring. The teams were from different backgrounds and mentalities, making the judgment criteria very high. And finally, go for announcing the winners. The first winner is the Appjad project from Palestine, the second winner is XIoT from Egypt and the third winner is Neureno from the United Arab Emirates.
